Surf Classics Day: Playgrounds in Paradise, 16mm projection!
A globe-trotting celebration of the late 1970s free-ride era, featuring a who's who of the era's surfing royalty, including Shaun Tomson, Michael Ho, Mark Richards, Mark Warren, Larry Bertlemann, Ian Cairns, Jeff Hakman, and Michael Peterson.
Shot on diverse iconic locations in Hawaii, Africa, Malibu, Puerto Rico, Mexico, and France, Playgrounds in Paradise is a historical document of a generation who redefined what surfing could look like.
The film was directed and produced by pioneering American-Australian filmmaking duo Alan & Evelyn Rich. Alan began surfing at Torrance Beach in LA's South Bay in 1960, picked up a camera not long after, and went on to produce a string of iconic surf films, such as Wizards of the Water (1981). The couple toured the world together before settling in Lennox Head.
We’re thrilled to be able to present Playgrounds in Paradise in its original 16mm format! This is a rare opportunity to experience this 1977 classic surf film on celluloid.
Surf Classics Day is presented in collaboration with FriendsLab.
Friends Lab is an artist run Super 8 and 16mm group in the Northern Rivers, dedicated to the preservation of analog film and technology. The group centres around preserving the history of film through screenings and events, and hosts workshops to support the next generation of traditional and experimental analog filmmaking.
For the occasion we will make the A&I Hall a screen with Super 8 looping projection of surf footage shot by local artists! Shot on Kodak Ektachrome and hand developed by FriendsLab.
