This intimate documentary follows Jack Johnson's journey from surfer to filmmaker, to world-renowned musician.
The film traces how Jack’s early years making surf films with close friends became a foundation for a much broader creative life as an artist. Blending rare archive material from those formative surf films and Jack’s personal archives with present-day reflections, the film weaves together how lived experience, friendship, and Jack’s passion for exploration and discovery helped shape the sound and the stories behind the music.
Directed by Emmett Malloy, this up-close-and-personal documentary features an original score by Jack Johnson and Hermanos Gutiérrez, and a stand-out cast of surfers, musicians and filmmakers, including Kelly Slater, Rob Machado, Gerry Lopez, Chris Malloy, G. Love, Ben Harper, John Florence, and Kim Johnson.
“The film weaves together archival moments, live performances, and visual storytelling that mirrors the ebb and flow of the ocean itself. It’s a reminder that Johnson’s music has always existed somewhere between motion and stillness - crafted for sandy feet, salt air, and quiet reflection.” - KXAN
